Create order with a spring clean
A proper spring clean is particularly suitable here, as cleaning has been proven to make you happy and promote mental well-being. To get the most out of your spring cleaning, we have put together a few tips for you.
1. Plan the cleaning day in advance
Create a cleaning plan in advance in which you list the order of the rooms and the objects and areas to be cleaned there. This way you avoid overlooking important things and ticking off finished areas is particularly fun!
2. Be creative and don’t just clean the usual
When drawing up your cleaning plan, get your brain cells working on what can go on the list. From electronic devices, hairbrushes and bicycles to running shoes, there are countless things in the household that are rarely cleaned but definitely need it.
3. Cleaning from top to bottom
Always start cleaning at the top, for example on lamps or shelves, and work your way down. Floors always come last, as dust and dirt are most likely to collect there when cleaning other objects.
4. The right cleaning utensils are important
The right cleaning utensils are crucial for a thorough spring clean. Your standard equipment should include:
- Vacuum cleaner
- Floor mop with bucket
- Plastic gloves for drain and toilet
- Microfiber cloth for sensitive surfaces and windows
- Brush for stubborn places like grout in the bathroom
- Cleaning sponge for about dishes
- feather duster for surfaces such as shelves, televisions and lamps
If you don’t have everything you need at home and want to avoid the currently rather risky trip to the supermarket, there are of course alternatives for those who like to improvise:
- Old toothbrush for grout, dirty dishes or hard-to-reach places
- Old cotton T-shirt instead of the cleaning clothes
- Attach silk cloth to a stick to wipe off dust
5. Deep cleaning is the order of the day during spring cleaning
Really go deep when spring cleaning. Clear out the fridge, shelves, cupboards and drawers completely and clean every last corner. Often you can even find treasures you thought were lost…or that moldy strawberry yogurt from 2018.
6. Household products instead of industrial cleaners
If you don’t have any cleaning products at home, you can make your own all-purpose cleaner with a few simple ingredients. In addition, you not only save money, but also protect the environment. Everything you need:
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp grated curd soap
- 1 squeeze lemon juice
- 1 cup warm water
- Optional essential oil such as lavender for a pleasant scent
Mix the ingredients well by stirring and, if available, pour into a spray bottle. Whether in the bathroom, kitchen or even on windows, dirt can now be removed easily and in a completely natural way.
7. Before and after photos
The joy of a successful spring clean only really comes into its own when you see the result. The best way to do this is to take photos of your rooms before and after cleaning and compare the images. If you no longer recognize your apartment, you’ve done everything right!
8. Motivate your roommates
Do you have children, a partner or live in a shared flat? Motivate your roommates to tackle this project together. Not only do you have more fun as a group, but you can also help each other. The time-saving factor is probably negligible under the current circumstances.
9. It’s much easier with the right cleaning playlist
A cleaning day is not a cleaning day if it is not accompanied by motivational music at full volume. The broom is a lot easier to swing when you’re dancing. You can find countless pre-made playlists on Spotify or YouTube if you don’t have one yourself.
10. Discover the Marie Kondo in you
Spring cleaning isn’t just about removing dirt, it’s about really sprucing up your home and getting your life back in order. Clean out your closet, rearrange your desk, clear out your shelves: the possibilities are endless. If you need inspiration, take a look at the Japanese tidying expert Marie Kondo, who inspires millions with her tips.
